Mapusa: The Food and Drugs Administration Goa (FDA) has intensified action against the artificial ripening of bananas at the Mapusa Sub Yard in Mapusa following surveillance drives and a joint meeting with the Sub Yard Association and banana vendors.<\/p>\n
During the meeting, a zero-tolerance resolution was passed stating that any vendor found using chemical solutions to ripen bananas in the future will face strict action. Authorities warned that the concerned shops will be permanently sealed and their business licences cancelled.<\/p>\n
Officials also informed that a coordination meeting will be held next week to ensure the full operationalisation of approved ripening chambers, and all vendors have been directed to use only government-approved ripening facilities for the ripening of fruits.<\/p>\n
As part of enforcement action, around 300 kg of bananas worth approximately \u20b921,000 were seized and destroyed at the Mapusa Sub Yard after a wholesaler reportedly admitted to using unapproved ripening agents.<\/p>\n
In a broader inspection drive conducted across Mapusa and parts of Bardez, the FDA inspected 20 food businesses, out of which eight establishments were ordered to suspend operations immediately due to unhygienic conditions and absence of proper licences.<\/p>\n
Additionally, a local hawker was fined \u20b92,000 for operating without a valid registration from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI).<\/p>\n
The surveillance drive was led by Designated Officer Richard Noronha, with FDA teams continuing evening inspections to monitor the use of banned chemicals such as ethephon used for artificial ripening of fruits.<\/p>\n
Authorities stated that the crackdown aims to protect consumer health and ensure that fruits sold in markets are safe and free from harmful chemicals.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
